Where are our protest songs , which ones can be our anthem ...
I was born by the river
In a little tent
And just like the river
I've been running ever since
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change gonna come
Oh, yes it will
It's been too hard living
But I'm afraid to die
I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change gonna come
Oh yes it will
I go to the movie, and I go downtown
Somebody keep tellin me "don't hang around"
It's been a long, a long time coming,
But i know a change gonna come
Oh yes it will
Then I go to my brother
I say brother help me please
But he winds up knocking me
Back down on my knees
There's been times that I thought
I wouldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Oh, yes it will
And there is the great song from Les Mis ...
Of course we need not borrow from the foreigners ... we have our own great songs and anthems ... let me introduce you to Dr. Sam & Mufazir, Saya Anak Malaysia.
1953
Bulan 5 aku dilahirkan
Di sebuah negeri yang diberi nama
NEGERI SEMBILAN
( 2 )
Selepas itu aku dibesarkan
Di NEGERI KELANTAN
Aku belajar di sekolah orang putih
Dekat dengan Pasir Puteh
Saya Anak Malaysia ( 4X )
( 3 )
Lepas sekolah aku merayau
Negeri mat saleh aku merantau
Tempat orang indah sekali
Tapi MALAYSIA dekat di hati
Saya Anak Malaysia ( 4X )
Sampai masa aku pun balik
Tapi makweku nampak pelik
Dia kata nak jadi apa
Aku kata itu Tuhan punya kuasa
Saya Anak Malaysia ( 4X )
( 4 )
Lemah lembut sopan santun
Sudah menjadi darah dagingku
Walaupun aku nampaknya kutu
Aku hormat orang tuaku
Saya Anak Malaysia ( 4X )
(Ulang 2,3 & 4)
Here In My Home by various Malaysian artistes.
My all time fav ... its a kind of protest song but its more than that. It talks about being one with the earth and all that live on it. Its a matter of respecting the soul of one and all, and in many ways our struggle for transparency, clarity, integrity in our regulating bodies, caring for our weakest links .... its all represented in the song. Against oppression, against corruption ... The great, no, the greatest ... Zainal Abidin ...
